Christopher D’Souza, Roshana Goonewardene and Athula Ginige

Chapter 16 in Managing Information Technology Projects:Building a Body of Knowledge in IT Project Management, 2023, pp 451-481 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: The state of IT project management is at a crossroads. Modern IT projects must satisfy the needs of multiple stakeholders, meet commercially viable outcomes, deliver to global demands, and constantly evolve to meet rapid advances in technology. The advances in IT have led to new tools which in turn demand better and fitting project management processes to support new and complex architectures, skilled global teams, build stakeholder trust, create accurate estimates, manage accountability, and monitor performance. Hence, a modern IT project manager needs new tools, frameworks, processes, skills, and experience to manage such diverse and complex projects. The authors recommend an integrated project management system that consists of several related sub-systems. Some of these should be driven by AI to support the processes related to change management, estimation, resource management, collaboration and decision making. Such an AI based system can enrich building of trust, transparency, accountability and confidence among the stakeholders of the project.
