The Role of a Financial Futures Exchange

J.Y. Pillay

Chapter 20 in Resilience, Dynamism, Trust:50 Landmark Statements by MAS Leaders, 2021, pp 198-203 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: MAS has been closely associated with the Singapore International Monetary Exchange (SIMEX) from the outset. Uniquely, notwithstanding our role as regulator, we deployed two of our senior officers, Mr Ng Kok Song and Mr Koh Beng Seng, to serve on the board of SIMEX. Both of them, especially Mr Ng, worked strenuously to widen the range of contracts offered; strengthen links with exchanges overseas, particularly the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, or CME; expand membership and boost the level of activity. I am grateful to those two officers for their contributions. The fact that they have now withdrawn from active management of SIMEX is a sign that MAS believes that the exchange now rests on strong foundations and that the private sector is fully competent to run the show. May I congratulate Mrs Elizabeth Sam on her election as chairlady, and wish her, her board and members good fortune, prudence and stability…
