Abstract:
This chapter overviews the concepts and development of green construction projects, policies, and success stories. The tangible and intangible benefits of green construction projects are discussed. A summary and evolution of the existing green construction project rating tools are provided. We explain how green construction projects align with 11 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Green construction project planning and design are described. In addition, the increasing importance of green construction projects globally is clarified. We then present examples of green construction projects and policies in the US, UK, Hong Kong, and other countries. The role of the World Green Building Council and its 70 plus members in promoting green construction projects is described. We present the history, the status, and the future of green construction projects to inform stakeholders of available opportunities for research and development. Moreover, some green construction project management (PM) issues and challenges are discussed. Finally, we present real-world case studies of three PM success stories of green construction projects in the US, China, and Ireland.
