Chapter 5 in Developing a Body of Knowledge for Green Construction Project Management, 2024, pp 135-169 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.
Abstract:
There have been concerns over the state of climate change and the construction industry’s impact on the measures put in place to implement climate change initiatives. One of the significant contributions of the construction industry toward improving the environment is the introduction of green construction. Unfortunately, the implementation of green construction projects is plagued with several challenges, including the project management (PM) techniques required to carry out specific tasks. This chapter offers a systematic examination of the issues regarding the green construction project manager and their activities in a green construction project. The chapter begins with a critical examination of the definition of a green construction project manager. It then discusses the key attributes required of an effective green construction project manager. The competencies required of a green construction project manager are also discussed. Following these, the roles and duties of the green construction project manager are elaborated. In addition, the challenges faced by green construction project managers are discussed. These discussions lead the chapter to identify the best practices for developing an effective green construction project manager. This chapter contributes significantly to the emerging green construction PM field by critically examining the green construction project manager. The issues covered can open the debate on the possibility of creating a route or a framework to certify professionals as green construction project managers.
