Green Construction Project Success

Tayyab Ahmad and Tarek Zayed

Chapter 14 in Developing a Body of Knowledge for Green Construction Project Management, 2024, pp 455-498 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: This chapter entails the concepts as well as a detailed understanding of “success” for green construction projects. The chapter starts with a definition of project success and the key concepts of project success, i.e., success factors and success criteria. Success criteria are the standards on which performance of a project is determined. Success factors, however, are the sociotechnical conditions to ensure that the project is developed as aspired. Differences in the development of green construction projects compared to traditional construction projects are explained to emphasize the unique nature of green construction project success. With a detailed review of research on the subject matter, this chapter provides an in-depth account of the success factors and success criteria. While providing a detailed account of green construction success criteria, the role of green certification in determining project success is explained. Success factors are explained in detail by classifying them with respect to key project stakeholders. The chapter concludes with some key takeaway messages for readers and also provides an account of the limitations in the use of presented findings. In essence, this chapter gives both the academics and practitioners of built environment a thorough understanding of how the success of green construction projects is typically determined and how the likelihood of success in such projects can be improved.
