Abstract: Universities can be viewed as complex purposeful systems, and therefore, we begin our journey with some general, but pertinent, observations about an important aspect of such systems. McMenamin and Palmer (1984) make the important distinction between the essence of a system and its incarnation. The essence of a system represents the very reason for its existence, and its incarnation represents the means by which a system accomplishes its essence.
