Open Innovation and Improvement of China’s Competitiveness

Chapter 13 in The Competitiveness of Nations 1:Navigating the US–China Trade War and the COVID-19 Global Pandemic, 2022, pp 271-288 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: The past fifty years have witnessed the rise of China to become one of the world’s largest economies. China’s achievements rest in its unique path of socialist development, which emphasizes the dual role of the visible hand of government (fairness) and the invisible hand of the market (efficiency). It has also demonstrated the flexible adoption of open innovation not only in crossing the firm’s boundary but also spanning over national borders. Through the historical depiction of China’s economic development and strategic analysis of China’s macro policy and micro operational features, we find that a triangle governance mode can be used to represent China’s remarkable performance, behind which it conforms to the same logic of the ABCD model.
