Chapter 9 in The Rise of the New Economic Powers and the Changing Global Landscape, 2023, pp 351-363 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: I started this book by asking why it was necessary to write (and hopefully read) a book about a group of major emerging markets, a cluster of nine countries dubbed the New Economic Powers: the NEP-9. I trust the subsequent chapters have provided you with the insights and knowledge that inform the answer to that question. In the year 2022, the NEP-9 countries are significant players on the world stage. They are among the largest global exporters and importers and important investors through which unknown companies with unknown brands gain visibility and success in western markets. The NEP-9 middle classes are increasingly spreading their wings. These developments, driven by the catching up process, are fairly recent phenomenons inspiring a certain degree of discomfort in western countries. Policymakers, consumers, and businesses are faced with new neighbors, which tends to lead to some tension and uncertainty. How will I relate to them? Will I have to adapt? And what if we have very different ideas about how to use the front garden?…
