Abstract:
How I wish things were that straight-forward! In reality, they weren’t which meant the process involved some fumbling and all when I was growing up. Socially, I was incredibly awkward as a child – to the point where I struggled to fit in with my peers despite attending traditionally good schools. I’m not quite sure why. Perhaps it was due to some form of personal complex. As one can imagine, the good-lookers and the class clowns would be more popular. As an only child whose parents were somewhat distant and left me to my own devices, I was quite withdrawn and this could have added to my lack of confidence. But this played a part in honing my interest in reading and, by extension, global affairs. I remember spending a lot of time reading. I could recite world capitals when I was very young and would occasionally even peruse the encyclopedia.
