Abstract:
The pursuit of virtue and wisdom involves an ongoing discussion about the nature of the human being, a discussion that is called “humanism.” The discussion must seek to design the institutions and social arrangements that are most suitable to the human person and must then agree on the behaviors required of the human being to fit within and make optimal use of the institutions and social arrangements. The discussion must center on a debate about the definition of what it means to be a human being and the place of the human being in the created order, an order that reflects some form of natural wisdom. Humanism is ancient and ongoing, and observation of it over the centuries suggests to us that it takes two forms. One we will designate intellectual humanism, the celebration of the human being in the activity of the mind, and the other we will designate practical humanism, the celebration of the human being in the work of the world.
