Abstract: Entrepreneurship provides an opportunity for human betterment, by means of a process of continuing change. If the change is wise and humane, then entrepreneurship becomes the tool — humane entrepreneurship — that contributes a step toward building an economy that is humane. In the vast pool of human needs and desires that constitutes aggregate demand, economic change is a powerful process. If the process is to make sense to human aspirations, we must give thought to what it means for change to make a person truly better off. If we define economic change to be only about the frivolous addition of more gadgetry to the surfeit of a consumerist society, our understanding of the power of change is weakened, and we miss an understanding of the central importance of the humane entrepreneur. Change, guided by wisdom, can be seen to offer instead the pathway to a humane economy, to fruitful happy lives and to the growth in human virtue.
