Ordinary People, Extraordinary Outcomes: The Occupational Status of American Jews Over the Twentieth Century

Barry Chiswick

Chapter 5 in The Economics of Religion, 2023, pp 135-145 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: This chapter focuses on the dramatic change over the course of the twentieth century in the economic status of Jews in the United States. Using data on the occupational attainment of men from census and survey sources from 1890 to 2000, it demonstrates both the rapid absolute and relative occupational advancement from lower-skilled jobs to professional employment. By 2000, 53 percent of Jewish men were in professional occupations, compared to only 20 percent of non-Jewish white men. Reasons for this impressive achievement are discussed.
