Carbon Storage in Harvested Products along the Wood Supply Chain through Industry 4.0 Technologies: Challenges, Opportunities, and Policy Implications

Nophea Sasaki

Chapter 7 in Energy Transition and Carbon Neutrality in ASEAN:Developing Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage Technologies, 2024, pp 173-200 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: The global wood industry annually harvests and consumes approximately 2.2 billion m3, presenting a significant opportunity to increase carbon storage within harvested wood products (HWPs) through strategic implementation of advanced technologies. While the advent of the Industry 4.0 revolution has introduced a suite of technologies with the potential to enhance carbon storage in HWPs, research has been limited on this crucial subject. This chapter provides a comprehensive review of past efficiencies in harvesting, processing, and manufacturing along the supply chain within the Southeast Asian wood industry and proposes well-informed policy recommendations based on the research to facilitate the early adoption of cutting-edge technologies, with the aim of optimizing forest utilization and management while increasing carbon storage in HWPs. This chapter advocates for sustainable practices that align with global climate goals and promote a greener future by addressing the critical knowledge gap regarding the utilization of Industry 4.0 technologies to enhance carbon storage in HWPs.
