Chapter 4 in A General History of China's Foreign Trade:Volume 2, 2025, pp 153-230 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: On 18 April 1927, the Nanking National Government was established. Its establishment and the reunification of the whole country were welcomed and recognized by the Chinese people, because in the cognitive environment of “New South and Old North” at that time, the establishment of a new government and a unified regime was always more desirable than the long-standing annoying Beiyang Government and the long-term separatist scuffle. The unity of the country and the relative political stability created a more favorable environment for economic development. The Great Depression in the world from 1929 to 1933 and the “September 18th Incident”, or Mukden Incident, launched by Japan in 1931 severely restrained China’s economic development, and China’s foreign trade developed with difficulties and twists.
