Abstract:
This chapter explores the social responsibility measures undertaken by Indian organizations since independence and, in the process, identifies existing policies, practices, and patterns of development leading to the introduction of the Social Responsibility in Companies Act, 2013. The chapter highlights the notable social contributions of Indian organizations over the years and draws a vis-à-vis parallel between economic development and social responsibility undertaken by organizations in India. Moreover, this chapter focuses on emerging trends and challenges facing Indian organizations with respect to their stakeholder responsibilities and analyzes the 10year period after the Social Responsibility Act was legislated in 2013. The chapter concludes by identifying critical areas of focus for Indian organizations in discharging their social responsibility duties in the near future.
