Chapter 2 in Building a Body of Knowledge in Modern Methods of Construction and Offsite Construction, 2025, pp 16-36 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.
Abstract:
This chapter aims to provide an overview of state-of-the-art technology applications in modern construction projects. It focuses on digital and computing technologies that rely on computer software and hardware resources. The chapter begins with an introduction to the role and impact of digital technologies in the construction sector and then focuses on some solutions being used nowadays. These include Building Information Modelling (BIM) solutions, Extended Reality (XR) technologies — such as Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) — and Reality Capture techniques — such as photogrammetry using Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs) and Laser Scanning (LS). We provide basic definitions and application examples for each technology and discuss some of the adoption benefits and challenges. The chapter also describes the technical characteristics of systems and devices that make up powerful tools for connecting people, processes, and data throughout the delivery of construction projects. In conclusion, we provide a summary of the technologies and their synergy, followed by a discussion on future trends. This chapter is a valuable resource for construction professionals, stakeholders, and researchers who wish to get to grips with the most recent technological developments that are transforming the sector.
