Chapter 12 in Building a Body of Knowledge in Modern Methods of Construction and Offsite Construction, 2025, pp 324-344 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: Conventional building techniques have been criticised for their low productivity, cost overruns, lengthy construction times, and resource wastes. The adoption of new delivery methods such as offsite construction as a modern method of construction (MMCs) have emerged. However, despite the potential benefits of offsite construction, it is pervaded by some implementation challenges. This chapter provides a comprehensive review of the challenges in the management of the supply chain for offsite construction. Some of the key challenges include: stakeholder coordination, communication, transportation, quality control, procurement, and technology integration. More collaborative relationships, quality control measures, application of lean principles, and the application of advanced technologies are a few of the solutions suggested, in the chapter It is anticipated that, by addressing these challenges and implementing effective strategies, key offsite construction actors can achieve efficiency, productivity in offsite construction supply chain. A well-managed supply chain is crucial for successful offsite construction projects, optimising material flow, reducing costs, improving quality, and ensuring timely project delivery.
