AbstractThis chapter provides an overarching introduction to the field of knowledge management (KM). It examines the emerging context and rationale for KM, the implications and benefits of KM for organisations, and the current understanding of the KM concept itself. The aim is to provide a broad theoretical basis for exploring the role of technology in KM and to set the scene for the remaining chapters of the book.
