Abstract: AbstractIn the packet delivery process, packets are sometimes dropped by network congestion (packet loss). Several authors have studied some protocols for dissolving packet loss. For example, a window flow control scheme which sets the window to half of the first window size when a sender detects congestion, has already been considered. Recently, a window flow control scheme with Explicit Congestion Notification, by which a sender detects congestion during connection, has been proposed and several authors have shown that ECN mechanisms is effective by simulation. This paper considers a stochastic model of a window flow control scheme for a communication system with Explicit Congestion Notification. The mean time until the data transmission succeeds is analytically derived and an optimal policy which maximizes the throughput is discussed. Finally, numerical examples are given.
