Abstract: AbstractGeneralised linear models may be applied to the analysis of data in the social sciences and provides a basis for postgraduate training in data analysis. The three techniques of Ordinary least-squares (OLS) regression, proportional odds models and multi-nomial logistic regression enable a huge range of hypotheses to be evaluated for univariate models of continuous, ordered categorical and unordered categorical data. As these techniques are part of the same theoretical model, the interpretation of model parameters, model fit statistics, diagnostics and model-selection techniques are very similar and may, therefore, be learned within a typical postgraduate research course. This paper provides a basic introduction to the use of these models and demonstrates similarities between the models using a range of data.
