Abstract: AbstractThe sale of high-tech New Zealand companies to offshore buyers has attracted much criticism as it is assumed that the sale is bad for New Zealand. This paper explores the drivers that contribute to the sale by the founder entrepreneurs of ten companies since 1996. The literature on entrepreneur/founder sale tends to focus on the lack of skills of the entrepreneur to take the company to the next stage of growth as the key factor in their departure. The case studies show that the driving forces are much more diverse. The analysis suggests that the sale to offshore buyers may be a necessary growth transition that enables companies to resource the next phase of growth. Labeling this the "growing global" transition, it is argued that such sales are external validation of New Zealand's technology and companies and that the entrepreneurs and companies need to be supported through such transitions.
