Abstract:
AbstractSuppose that a database is updated and an amount of updated files accumulates additively. Some media failures occur at random. A full backup is made when the total updated files exceed a threshold level. To lessen the overhead of backup processing, the operation of an incremental backup with small overhead is adopted between the full backup. The mean time to incremental or full backup and the expected cost of these schemes are derived, using the theory of cumulative processes. Further, optimal numbers of incremental backup which minimize the expected costs are analytically discussed. A numerical example is finally given.
