Chapter 10 in Handbook of Business Practices and Growth in Emerging Markets, 2009, pp 181-200 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: AbstractThis chapter focuses on the retail sector in the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania and examines this sector from an historic perspective, including a discussion of the role of retail trade in these countries during the Soviet communist period through re-independence in 1991, and accession to the European Union in 2004. This chapter also compares and contrasts the retail sector in the three countries, with extensive support provided through the analysis of empirical consumer shopping data collected in each country. The findings indicate that although retailers may wish to view the region as a single market, there are non-trivial differences in how consumers perceive retail service delivery, and that these drivers need to be accounted for in terms of successful retail performance.
