Abstract: AbstractThis paper explores properties of the multiplicative variant of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), some of which have not been emphasized in previous studies. The multiplicative AHP (MAHP) differs from the original AHP as proposed by Saaty [15] in that the aggregation of pairwise preference judgments is multiplicative, rather than additive. An argument in favor of the MAHP is that Several researchers have shown that an additive aggregation is technically incompatible with the assumption of a ratio scale of measurement, whereas a multiplicative aggregation is compatible. A parallel is drawn between the aggregation method used in the MAHP and “Returns to Scale” production models in Economics, such as the Cobb-Douglas model. Implications of the returns to scale properties of the MAHP are discussed, and examples are provided to illustrate the concepts. Moreover, this paper explores the extent, in practice, of the difference between these two aggregation methods, in terms of the overall ratings and rankings of the alternatives.
