Abstract: AbstractThis paper focus on health and care systems operation and provides an innovative approach towards improving performance, by offering tools to help an existing working group in the project of a new hospital facility at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. A simulation platform, devised and developed by the author, is described. The platform provides a patient-oriented modelling process and allows one to formulate a particular problem, to conduct a discrete event simulation experiment showing the possible outcomes within a 3D virtual scenario. Four standard queuing models are used to demonstrate the potentiality of the method. It is argued that the method is useful to the planning of facilities, training and teaching.
