Chapter 9 in Handbook on Business Information Systems, 2010, pp 199-219 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: AbstractMilk production is considered as the strategic activity in the national economy, as it is an important generator of foreign exchange and employments. The increased domestic competition associated with the globalization process of the markets required higher competitiveness and better performance of the organizations relating to the management of their activities. To avoid market loss or even to guarantee survival, these organizations have constantly been looking for ways to improving their performance. This study was carried out to typify the dairy industries in Minas Gerais state, in relation to their technical performance, by focusing on the socioeconomic, financial, and administrative aspects. A total of 142 dairy industries were analyzed, and the data envelopment analysis was used to measure their performance. It was verified that only 10 industries reached the maximum technical efficiency. In the cases of those showing inefficiency, it was observed that the main problem was not the incorrect production scale, but the inefficiency in using the inputs.
