Abstract: Conventional wisdom tends to credit the university as being the source of innovation. This is a misconception. Innovation can be initiated from any point by anyone in the national innovation system. The university has no monopoly on innovation. Thomas Edison, who held over 1,000 U.S. Patents in various types of electrical devices and applications, pursued his work quite independent of any university. Wilbur and Orville Wright, who pioneered the flying machine and laid the foundation for air transportation and space exploration of modern times, never attended any university. Steve Jobs, arguably the most important innovator in the knowledge economy, never finished his college education…
