In mid-April 2016 Indonesian President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo announced a planned moratorium on new palm oil concessions. The following July, Jokowi held a ministerial meeting with Environment and Forestry, Trade, Industry, and Spatial Planning Ministers to take the initiative forward — combining these actions with a continuing 2011 moratorium on peatland and forest exploitation and a drive to unify the convoluted concession maps that have plagued Indonesian forest protection for decades…
