Abstract:
The transboundary haze is the most important factor affecting the otherwise very clean environment of Singapore. It is a very important factor affecting whether people will stay or come to Singapore or leave. In Chinese cities, it has recently been reported that whenever the smog level was high, many more people obtained information regarding emigration. In Singapore, with the haze situation getting so bad around September/October 2015, similar considerations may prevail. I myself for one had considered Singapore a possible location for long-term retirement living. But the persistent haze in 2015 made me have a second thought. The haze situation in 2013, though also sharp at times, did not persist for as long as the one in 2015. However, the more important reason to avoid the haze is the health (and hence welfare) of people who will be here with or without the haze…
