Abstract:
This story describes my 15-year intellectual journey in search of Adam Smith’s authentic views concerning economics and public policy. It began when I chose An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations for my nighttime reading. I had just read and reread Patrick O’Brian’s 20-volume historical fiction about a British navy captain and his ships’ surgeon during the Napoleonic Wars and was looking for something else. I had become a mature reader undertaking tasks beyond my abilities as a younger person, so I took up the copy of Wealth of Nations I had purchased 50 years earlier but had tried and failed to read on several occasions…
