Abstract: The concept of the hidden curriculum, referring to the role schools play in preparing children for the transition from family to society, is traced to the work of French sociologist Émile Durkheim. The narrower but related concept of the shadow curriculum focuses on values and beliefs both good and bad embedded in particular educational settings.
