Abstract: I was astonished and somewhat amused to see communist flags carried by demonstrators in Old Town Edinburgh a few years ago. At least in my eyes, the war against socialism and communism had been won so thoroughly and so long ago that the protestors seemed quixotic and even quaint, but that had not always been the case. After 7 December 1941, we were at war with the Japanese and Germans. When they surrendered, the Western democracies squared off against the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and the People’s Republic of China in the Cold War that followed. The conflict between China and the United Nations on the Korean peninsula ended in a stalemate only 3 years before the Pierson and Gordon–Howell reports were published.
