Abstract: I studied marine biology in China, and went to Duke University in 1991 to complete my PhD in this field. However, once I was there, I found recent developments in genetics so interesting that I decided to switch my field of study. In 2002, I joined the Genome Institute of Singapore to head its research program on human genetics. When we talk about human genetics, one cannot help but look back at the futuristic sci-fi thriller Gattaca (1997), in which the social fabric is defined by individuals’ genetic make-up, and where genetic manipulation in order to ensure every child inherits the best traits from each parent is common practice. Could this happen in real life? The real question today is not whether or not this will become reality, but rather how soon will this be a part of our reality…
