Abstract: AbstractThe societal pressure on sustainable housing development is on the rise. Homes need to be socially, economically and environmentally sustainable in response to the wants and needs of individual homebuyers/users as well as society. However, existing housing design approaches being applied by today's homebuilders barely lead to the accomplishment of the sustainability agenda. Mass customization was seen as one of the potential means to tackle issues arising in achieving the housing sustainability. Based on the notion, a systems approach to sustainable homes and the interactive design communication tool were introduced. This study led to a suggestion that along the line with the research on mass customization, the way to mass-personalize a house after occupancy, which may need to involve inclusive design approaches, should be examined for the delivery of truly sustainable homes that satisfy the dynamic and diverse market demands and requirements for housing over the lifetime.
