Preparing Your Patent Applications
Matthew Y Ma
Chapter 6 in Fundamentals of Patenting and Licensing for Scientists and Engineers, 2015, pp 128-149 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.
Abstract:
Now that you have generated a final list of inventions for which to file patents and have laid out your patent filing plan, the next step is to complete the patent applications and to claim your patent rights. How you claim your rights is not only determined by how the claims are written, but also by the integrity of your entire patent application. This chapter discusses the essentials in preparing a patent application. Whether your patent attorney is drafting the entire application, or you are doing partial work under the cost-splitting model previously discussed, having an understanding of these essentials is rather important. As a patent starts with the inventor's disclosure of his ideas, whereupon the utilization and economic value of the patent are based, it is crucial that you, as the inventor, are involved in this process from the very beginning.
