Common Practices in Patent Monetization

Matthew Y Ma

Chapter 12 in Fundamentals of Patenting and Licensing for Scientists and Engineers, 2015, pp 236-248 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: Patent sales, licensing and technology transfer are common ways of monetizing a patent asset. Monetization involves a completely different industry than that of patent creation, i.e., patent filing and prosecution. Patent filing and prosecution are usually handled by patent attorneys and patent agents who work with the Patent Office, whereas patent sales and licensing are usually handled by patent brokerage firms or by patent owners themselves, who work with buyers in the marketplace. This chapter is intended to expose you to some common practices in patent transactions and to a broader perspective in dealing with patents at different stages.
