Chapter Three: Chinese Cultural Resources Relevant to CSR

Benoit Vermander

Chapter 3 in Corporate Social Responsibility in China:A Vision, an Assessment and a Blueprint, 2014, pp 47-66 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: As we have already noted, CSR is anchored into cultural values and traditions that inspire corporate ways of proceeding — and these ways of proceeding are sometimes hard to translate from one national environment to another. This may create distress for managers and employees alike, as misunderstandings and distrust are then prone to arise. However, striving for mutual awareness of one another's cultural background and values helps the protagonists to forge new languages and modes of communication through which they can elaborate codes of cooperation and conduct. Cultural communication is of particular importance for putting into application CSR-related issues and policies, as business in China involves actors coming from very different backgrounds. Furthermore, China's practices and regulations themselves reflect the cross-breeding and globalization process through which the Chinese economy and society have been evolving during the last three decades or so.
