1. CRISIS

Eric L. Jones

Chapter 1 in Revealed Biodiversity:An Economic History of the Human Impact, 2014, pp 3-17 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: One of Adam Smith's most celebrated remarks was that the establishment of the European colonies in America and the West Indies arose from ‘no necessity’. Exploration was not driven by ecological crisis at home. Certainly, efforts to expand the resource base were proceeding overland, in Eastern Europe and across the Russian steppes. But Europe did not strictly need a fresh trove of real resources like food, fish and timber, welcome though they might be, nor were the first explorers seeking them. There was still scope in the landmass of which Europe was part.
