12. PRISTINE AMERICA
Eric L. Jones
Chapter 12 in Revealed Biodiversity:An Economic History of the Human Impact, 2014, pp 157-180 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.
Abstract:
The Americas were already occupied when the colonists arrived. Although European occupation eventually raised exploitation to unprecedented levels, the New World was no tabula rasa. I shall illustrate the processes by means of two of the most significant movements that settlement entailed. They were the colonisation of New England and the surge onto the prairies.
