Abstract:
With the success of the European Union ETS and Acid Rain Programs, the use of markets to combat environmental challenges has been firmly established. The world is now witnessing the adoption of the environmental market framework in several emerging economies. In tandem, we are also witnessing the emergence of several regional markets in developed economies. Many of these markets are already in early stages of development. These programs exhibit different environmental objectives, mandated entities, compliance schedules, and cap-and-trade designs. Interestingly, some of these markets are already exploring the potential for market linkages, which if successful, will create a plurilateral market solution to manage global warming. The development of multiple markets in different geographic regimes aimed at solving global warming suggests that, in the short-term, a host of tradable emission products and risk management tools could exist in parallel…
