Abstract:
This paper measures quantitatively, and presents diagrammatically, the degree of linkages between prewar and early postwar Taiwanese economic development. After a brief introduction of the Taiwanese economy in both periods, we examine long-run time series data of real GDP in the NT dollar and the U.S. dollar, the production structure, the labor composition, the trade structure. In general, the existing data seem to suggest that the postwar recovery to prewar peaks was not completed in the 1950s, and not even until the mid-1960s.
