Abstract: As Ilya Prigogine stepped up to receive his 1977 Nobel prize in chemistry from the hands of Carl Gustaf, King of Sweden, two university presidents watched him with intense pride: the heads of the Free University of Brussels and of The University of Texas at Austin.
