As Ilya Prigogine stepped up to receive his 1977 Nobel prize in chemistry from the hands of Carl Gustaf, King of Sweden, two university presidents watched him with intense pride: the heads of the Free University of Brussels and of The University of Texas at Austin. Brussels had been his alma mater and his home town (his family settled there after fleeing from the Russian Revolution that occurred only a couple of months after he was born.)
