Critical Natural Resources and Climate Change Mitigation

Anja Brumme

Chapter 6 in Climate Finance:Theory and Practice, 2017, pp 107-126 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: The availability of clean and highly efficient electricity generation technologies is crucial for climate change mitigation. However, in the case of wind power plants, the turbines with the highest conversion efficiency rely on rare earths, i.e., critical natural resources. Failure of the related upstream market might have the potential to impede wind power deployment and, consequently, raise the costs of climate change mitigation.
