Abstract:
The contemporary international monetary system was born out of the Bretton Woods system. Its operating mechanism was set up to correct or mitigate disequilibrium in international trade and balance of payments. Since it was an outcome of compromise among various parties, the contemporary international monetary system is bound to encounter numerous problems in its functioning.
