Abstract:
In 2012, China attained a historic development milestone: for the first time, more Chinese citizens lived in cities than in the countryside. Government figures reported that 691 million people, or over 51 percent of China's population, lived in urban areas at the beginning of the year. While this milestone had been attained by the UK in 1851 and the US in 1920, China's urbanization had been extremely rapid compared to other emerging markets such as India and Thailand. Only about 20 percent of China's population lived in urban areas when market reforms were first introduced in 1979. By 2030, more than 70 percent are expected to live in cities (see Figs. 1 and 2)…
