Abstract:
Purpose: Multinational enterprises (MNEs) aim to recognize the importance of corporate social responsibility (CSR) toward society. Further partnerships across different sectors are required in order to address and mitigate environmental and social challenges. Consequently, this research explores the determinants and practices that enhance partnerships in Egypt, and investigates the natural relationships between MNEs and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in the country. Furthermore, it underlines the mutual benefits and obstacles of these partnerships, emphasizing the role of the Egyptian government in aiding and supporting partnerships among stakeholders.Design/Method/Approach: Qualitative research has been conducted to investigate the structure of multinational partnerships with Misr EL Khair Foundation (MEK) as an NGO. The data collection methods include semi-structured interviews with key individuals and MNE partners in MEK, in addition to an analysis of reports and final proposals in collaboration with its multinational partners. The data have been collected from the MEK’s website and those of its international partners. Meta-analysis and a deductive content-analysis approach have been utilized to assess narrative and research questions regarding the benefits, challenges, and best practices that could enhance these partnerships.Findings: The most effective practices for reinforcing partnerships include intensive communication and institutionalization. A major benefit of these partnerships to MNEs is the increase in demand for their products and services. For the MEK, the primary benefit is raising funds for sustainability. The main challenges encountered in the partnerships between MNEs and NGOs include differences in perception, values, and interests. MEK’s preferred types of partnerships comprise active engagement, expertise sharing, training and development, a hybrid model, and economic cooperation. In contrast, the foundation’s key partners generally prefer sponsorships.Research Contributions: The research results add value to the existing studies in Egypt concerning the nature, benefits, challenges, obstacles, and drivers of MNE and NGO partnerships, as well as the practical implications for their sustainability.
