Value: Finance Foundations

Chapter 3 in Focus on Finance:Everything You Need to Know About Financial Management, 2026, pp 43-66 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.
Abstract:
The foundation of finance is value. A large part of the finance literature deals with defining and refining techniques for calculating value: i.e. valuation techniques. As seen, the objective of the firm is to maximise its value, so valuation techniques are an important part of the finance specialist’s toolkit. The most important economic decisions are those which involve investment in real assets, whether by individuals or by companies, as the impact is long-lasting. The key to making such decisions lies in deciding whether a particular asset will add value.
