Abstract: Anfang der 1990er Jahre gab es in der Qualität der ost- und westdeutschen Wohnungsbestände noch große Unterschiede. Ursache dafür war eine in Umfang und Struktur sehr unterschiedliche Wohnungsbautätigkeit nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Seit Mitte der 1990er Jahre haben sich große Veränderungen vollzogen. Eine hohe Bautätigkeit, verbunden mit sinkenden Bevölkerungszahlen, führte in Ostdeutschland zu hohen Wohnungsleerständen. Deutlich verbessert haben sich aufgrund hoher Bestandsinvestitionen der Bauzustand und die Ausstattung bewohnter Gebäude und Wohnungen... @In the early 1990s there were still marked differences in quality between the housing stock of eastern and western Germany. The reason was to be found in the very different attitudes to house building, in terms of both scale and structure, following the Second World War. A number of radical changes have taken place since the mid-'90s. In eastern Germany, high levels of housing construction coupled with a decline in the population have left vast numbers of dwellings now standing empty. At the same time, high levels of investment in the building stock have led to significant improvements in the quality of the building fabric and in the standard of the features and fittings of those buildings and dwellings that are occupied...
