Abstract: Das System der Zentralen Orte war und ist das räumliche Organisationsprinzip für Einrichtungen der Daseinsvorsorge und dient damit der Durchsetzung des Prinzips der Gleichwertigkeit der Lebensverhältnisse. Es muss entsprechend der demographischen Entwicklung Anpassungen erfahren. Orientierungen geben hierzu die Leitbilder und Handlungsstrategien der Raumentwicklung in Deutschland 2006. Dieser Beitrag untersucht die Veränderung des Zentralortsystems in Mitteldeutschland in den letzen 15 Jahren. In den Bundesländern Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt und Thüringen wurden in den letzten Jahren die Landesentwicklungspläne fortgeschrieben.
