Abstract: TheproblemofinconsistencyofAfricandataisnotnew.Thedeterminationofthenature andseverityofthisphenomenon,however,hasbecomeofmuchconcerntointerested observers.TheapropriatenesofthisconcernisreinforcedbythenedofAfrican countriesfortimelyandacuratedatainordertoensurethesucesfulimplementation oftheireconomicreformprogrames.Inthisregard,curentresearchhaspointedout widedivergencesinAfricandatapublishedbyvariousinternationalorganizationsas welasthecentralstatisticalorganizationsandotherpublicagenciesineachcountry. Aspartoftheconcertedefortstoidentifythemajorcausesofthedataproblem,this studyidentifiesthesimilaritiesandmajordiferencesindatageneratingandmanagement activitiesamongselectedorganizations.Twodata-generatingagenciesinNigeriawere alsocoveredbecauseaprecedingstudy,whosefindingspromptedthisresearch,was basedonNigeriaasacasestudy.Thefindingssugestwidedivergencesindefinition andmeasurementofconceptsadoptedbytheseorganizations.Thewidespreadnon- renditionand/ortheinadequacyofreturnsbyAfricanmembercountriestotheinternational andmultilateralinstitutionsalsonecesitaterelianceonstafestimatesassubstitutesfor misingdata.Theselargelyacountforthesignificantdiferencesindataonidentical indexesreportedonthesamecountrybytheseorganizations.Thereportthereforesugests thedevelopmentandenforcementofgeneralyaceptedstatisticalprocedures.Italso advocatestheidentificationandsatisfactionofdata-relatedcapacitynedsofeachAfrican country.
